How to Treat Viral Respiratory Infections Naturally

First of all, how do you know if it is a cold/virus or bacterial infection? Well, viruses tend to come out of the blue, starting with fevers, chills, body aches, scratchy/sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and/or ear pressure/pain/fullness. Bacterial infections are typically localized. Let’s say, like strep. Strep is a bacteria that affects the throat. It can be accompanied by a fever and a headache, but it usually does not come along with a cough, congestion, sneezing, runny nose, sinus pressure, or ear pain.

If you aren’t sure what is going on, it is a good idea to see your healthcare provider to help you understand. Going to the doctor should not equal leaving with a prescription! Yes, there are times we need antibiotics, but many providers in the country over-prescribe antibiotics, which can hurt you. You can have an allergic reaction. You can develop serious conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome. We can kill off good protective bacteria and cause yeast infections and overgrowth of bad bacteria like c.dif. We can over time increase your chances of getting sick, developing asthma, food sensitivities, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety/ADHD, autoimmune disease, and more. Don’t get me wrong, antibiotics can be lifesaving and should be taken if you do in fact have a bacterial infection. We can “clean the gut up” and reduce future risk through careful diet and supplementation in the event you DO need antibiotics.

That being said, then, what do we do for viruses? Well… there are a lot of things we can do! There are options ranging from prescription cough medicines to herbal, vitamin, essential oils, and homeopathic remedies.

I have brought my favorite supplements together here:

These recommended dosings are for adults (teenagers up). Please inquire about pediatric dosing. You may NOT need everything on this list. I have added some homeopathic recommendations for those wanting that. I have also added symptom relief recommendations, like additional support for sinus/nasal and throat symptoms, cough, etc. There are also general immune support recommendations like probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as homeopathy. These can be taken daily for immune system support, or if traveling/exposed/high-risk job, AND also when ill.
